There are certainly millions of answers to that one. If not billions. Everyone has their own meter regarding what creative is – and what isn’t. There are so many answers, we could start the longest game of telephone EVER.
My computer as been broken for two weeks now. It’s driving me crazy because I am addicted to my computer, the internet, social mediums of all kinds and the adobe creative suite. SO… I’ve been walking myself over to the library everyday just so I can find articles like this to entertain myself with. I checked off most of these. I’m not ashamed to say it’s a problem.
#27 Short Stories
Transforming familiar objects into fresh guacamole. What a wonderful stop motion. So creative.
#26 It’s ok, I didn’t plan on sleeping tonight anyway.
Probably the weirdest thing I’ve seen all month. I had to share this.

#25 TADA!
Okay so this is it people. My final expressed mixture of extreme fear, awe, surprise…. but mostly excitement! Holy shit is right! No one understands satire anymore.
In the design career path there are only a small percentage of skilled designers OR copywriters who eventually become creative directors. It’s a great achievement and wonderful promotion. VERY FEW PEOPLE GET THIS!
Hey, lets just face it. It’s extremely competitive and well kid…. you don’t have a chance!
Truth is, creative people like myself don’t usually make good management. (This not what I truly believe but usually what I hear from my professors, friends, colleagues and many of the forward looking minds in the industry. Isn’t that encouraging?)
Advice from Arron Templer: “Managing the creative process on the client side is different. Different from what I imagine it to be on the agency side, and different from managing other departments in a business.”
My advice: There are no templates for great management. People are people, equipped differently, motivated differently and who work differently. Check out this notion: “If the golden rule is do unto others as you would be done unto, then the platinum rule is do unto others as they would be done unto.” For creatives and their teams, this couldn’t be any more true.
Finding the right mesh of talent and interpersonal skills is a hard task, which is why good creative’s are revered. There are just so few people who can be creative and manage creative. You need to know how to communicate well, solve problems well and know how to adjust and work in any situation.
I suppose this post should be prefaced with a disclaimer. I have worked a lot on my own and with others. My personal anecdotes tend to originate from an at home perspective. I work a lot on my own and also a lot with others.
I’ve been thinking about what it takes to head a creative group — the experience, talent, managing ability and self-confidence. The qualities it takes to gain respect from the notoriously rebellious mindset of a creative. Stop caring and start listening. We are the creators. We take strategy and make it real. AND COOL. AND FUN. Because the best ideas make other designers feel like idiots.
It’s time I start jacking up the strategy x10000.
Gosh, I really like advertising.
Advice: Creative directors should be more on hands than this.
